Features
Exterior
Although the GLS is based off of the GL, it has numerous changes from the old version. The exterior styling has been modified, and the higher end GLS550 has sporty design accents over and above the more standard GLS350d and GLS450. All of those three models have roof rails, power-folding auto-dimming side mirrors and a sunroof. The 350 and 450d have 19" alloy wheels, whilst both the GLS550 and high performance AMG GLS 63 come with 21-inch alloy wheels, although those on the AMG are a little different. The AMG has some specific styling of its own. The GLS550 Night package comes with black wheels and black exterior accents. The exterior is elegant and and gives a strong sense of moving forward.
Interior
The interior is easy to enter...and hard to want to leave, according to Mercedes themselves. Depending on the trim level, upholstery is either MB-Tex premium vinyl or, for a bit extra, leather. Real wood trim and a leather-wrapped steering wheel add a sense of elegance. Premium packages add things like multicolor ambient lighting, lighted door sills and heated front and second row seats. The AMG has a sport style steering wheel. All four models have power-sliding second-row seats as an option for third-row access. This is while seating up to seven adults - with plenty of room for grownups even in the third row - and accommodating up to 93.8 cubic feet of cargo.
Technology
Even the lower end models come with the COMMAND infotainment interface, an 8 inch central display with rearview camera, and a sound system with HD radio and USB ports. Options include WiFi, built-in navigation and rear entertainment. The entertainment system can be controlled with both a touchpad and a console-mounted control knob. It has a user friendly menu and is designed to reduce distractions. TIt also works with the Mercedes-Benz mbrace smartphone app, letting you control your car using your phone and use in-vehicle apps.
Performance
The 350d is powered by a 3.0 liter turbocharged diesel V6, the 450 gets a 3.0-liter turbocharged gasoline V6, the 550 a 4.6-liter V8 and the AMG a 5.5-liter V8. Needless to say performance improves as you go up the model levels, and the diesel can be a tiny bit sluggage. All-wheel drive is standard, with nine-speed automatic transmission except on the AMG, which has seven speeds. MPG is reasonable for an SUV, although the lower levels do better - meaning model choice is in part a balance between performance and economics. Towing maximum is 7,500 for all models.
Safety
Mercedes has been known for safety for years - and the GLS models are no exception. Automatic crosswind stabilization, trailer stability assist, forward collision mitigation and driver attention monitor all come standard. Options include stolen vehicle location, blind spot monitor and lane assist, adaptive cruise control, etc. The safety features are excellent even if you don't choose the options, with crosswind stabilization particularly important for an SUV.
